{"id":2819,"date":"2023-01-02T10:36:25","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T15:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/steeleswallowinglab.ca\/srrl\/?page_id=2819"},"modified":"2025-06-20T18:05:51","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T22:05:51","slug":"which-parameters-are-included-in-the-aspekt-method","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/steeleswallowinglab.ca\/srrl\/videofluoroscopy-analysis-the-aspekt-method\/which-parameters-are-included-in-the-aspekt-method\/","title":{"rendered":"Which parameters are included in the ASPEKT Method?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ASPEKT Method includes the following swallowing parameters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Number of swallows per bolus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Penetration-Aspiration measured using the 8-point Penetration-Aspiration Scale (Rosenbek et al., 1996)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laryngeal Vestibule Closure (LVC) Integrity (i.e., complete, partial or incomplete closure)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Timing Measures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swallow Reaction Time (SRT: i.e., the interval between the frame of the bolus passing the mandible and onset of the hyoid burst)`<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hyoid Burst to UES Opening interval (HYB-UESO: i.e., the interval between onset of the hyoid burst and the first frame of upper esophageal sphincter opening)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UES Opening Duration (UESO Dur: i.e., the interval between the first frame of upper esophageal sphincter opening and the first frame of upper esophageal sphincter closure behind the bolus)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time-to-LVC (TTLVC: i.e., the interval between onset of the hyoid burst and the first frame of most complete LVC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LVC duration (LVC Dur: i.e., the interval between the first frame of most complete laryngeal vestibule closure and the offset of LVC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pixel-based Measures*:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*All pixel based measures are expressed in anatomically normalized values, relative to the length of a line running from the anterior inferior corner of the C2 vertebra to the anterior inferior corner of the C4 vertebra, and measured in a coordinate space with the y-axis aligned with the C2-C4 cervical spine and the x-axis defined perpendicular to the cervical spine. Single-dimension length or position measures are expressed in %(C2-4) units. Two-dimension area measures are expressed in %(C2-4)<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;units.
